Here is another outstanding original furniture design from Nina Edwards and her Nea Studio collection that is sure to be the focal point of any room it graces. The Twisted Sofa appropriately named is perfect for a modern interior that is focused on great looks and versatility. The flexible fabric covered L shaped Twisted Sofa incorporates a daybed and seat on the backside for a most versatile seating concept. After much testing, two types of foam were chosen, a firm foam for the seats and a softer foam for the back rests making a surprisingly comfortable experience, uncommon for a sofa possessing such dramatic visual appeal.

If you don’t have a spare room but love having friends over to stay, sleeping arrangements can be tricky. However if you have a sofa bed or futon, it means you can invite them over without having the extra worry.

Futons and sofa beds unfold to create an extra place to sleep in your home.
They come in a range of sizes, from single to king size, and can be specially made to fit a room. What’s more, they’re comfy too!

Sofa beds

Sofa beds look like your everyday settee.
You can get a one-seater, two-seater or three-seater that will fold out into a good sized bed.

They come already upholstered in all sorts of fabrics and have a mattress and legs that fold away into the seat.

It’s often possible to use a sofa bed as your main sofa in the living room. Or as extra seating in a conservatory, home office or loft space.
This means you can use it in the day, and turn it into a bed at night if you have friends or family to stay.

Sofa beds are easy to fold out and put away. You just need bedding, a sheet and some pillows to ensure a good night’s sleep!

Futons

Futons are just as easy and convenient as sofa beds and can be used as everyday seating as well as a place to sleep.
They’re great if you have a small bedroom and want to make the most of the space throughout the day.
Futons are named after the specialist futon mattress and the frame is often made from wood. They also come flat-packed so are easy to put in an awkward space.

Living with some of the most expensive land prices in Canada, interior designers in Metro Vancouver have long been forced to tweak architect Mies van der Rohe’s catchphrase: Less, it seems, must always reveal more.

“Given the size of condos today, you simply have to do more than one thing with one thing,” explains Danielle Lareau, principal of the locally based Giraffe Design Corp. “You have no choice but to be more creative.”

Which, for the Georgie Award winner, means looking hard at inventive multipurpose solutions. Take a sofa that she commissioned for a recent project so it was deep enough to double as a bed (from SofaWorks), or a coffee table that rises to transform into a dining room table (from Home Delight Furnishings). The Montrealer, who moved west nearly 20 years ago, says that since few people use a room just for dining, for example, “it’s also about not letting furniture take over a space which could be better used for something which you do more often.”

That’s a point that carries through into such places as the bedroom and the office for Tara Bushby, who has just opened a multipurpose furniture store in Gastown. “Dedicating a spot to do only one task is almost a waste of space,” she says, as she quickly turns around bookshelves (without removing a single tome) to reveal a bed. “If you have a 400-square-foot condo downtown, you don’t have that luxury. This helps to really utilize space – and taps into the Canadian consciousness of being careful about our footprint.”

The Victoria native was so impressed with the Italian-designed-and-manufactured modular pieces of Resource Furniture that she flew down to its New York store with her backers, Peter McCutcheon and Roy Sandsmark of Victoria’s Swiftsure Woodworkers Ltd. Now owning the rights to B.C., they brought the store to the capital in March before expanding to Vancouver last month. (Calgary and Seattle are also in their sights.) “I love good design and really wasn’t looking to go into retail,” she explains of the store which operates as Clei at its base in Brianza near Milan and also has an outlet in Hong Kong. “But I found it online when I was looking for a problem solver for a client, and I fell in love with it.”

For her, the furniture’s clean-lined approach is like the “iPad of the furniture world” in that it is a multitasker. “We improve things with digital technology, so why can’t we do that with furniture?” Bushby asks, as she continues to present examples of doubleduty items, such an office desk that lifts up – all smoothly operated by pistons – to uncover a bed (prices start around $1,800).

There are plenty of other clever touches dotted throughout the showroom: The side of the sectional that folds up to allow people to walk around both sides of a folded-down queen bed – or brought down to allow a small child to sleep there – or the high shelf that can be transitioned to rest neatly under the bed, and with everything on it remaining in place.

“You can have guests over but not have to change the way you live – have it work as a fully functioning office and, without moving a book, switch it around to create a bedroom,” adds Bushby, who studied at Vancouver Island University and still runs Livtona Interior Design, now in Vancouver. “With all the improvements, you can live much easier with less now. It’s a different way of living, but it’s a better way.”

That push toward new technology also excites Caroline Ranger Bevan, whose family has focused on wall beds for three generations.

Instant Bedrooms, her family’s company in Yaletown and Richmond (where it both manufactures and sells the beds, too), now imports a mechanism that allows for easy transformations from a long-established French company.

“These things have to be fingertip control – it can’t be a big lug,” she explains. Surrounded by a range of finishes for different styles and budget (from contemporary flat panel to custom carvings; a Buddha head, for example, illustrates “that these can be seen as much as an art piece as utility”), the design consultant agrees that it is “crazy” to waste floor spaces with a bed.

Ranger Bevan thinks that wall beds (priced from around $1,500) are the perfect solution for apartments with balconies off the bedrooms. Rather than having guests traipsing past your bed, you can return the bed into the wall (without removing the bedding on the spring mattresses that sit on laminated beech slats, allowing for ventilation) and push a couple of buttons to bring out an instant table. “Great for holding the cocktails,” she laughs.

Even when space is unlimited (the store works with many larger homes, as well as hotel groups such as Fairmont and Pan Pacific), she believes few want to “lose” a room. “People don’t relegate the room to a spare room when guests may only come a few times a year,” she believes. “Yet when someone comes to stay, they want them to have a proper bed.” (Side beds, which are lower and run sideways along the wall, have also been a trend for some time, since they protrude less into the room and may be easier for those with disabilities.)

So the next time you see a chair, a bookshelf or a coffee table, you can bet some inventor will be wondering what myriad other things it could be. After all, one-function furniture – as Ranger Bevan says – “is almost old school.”
