A sedate scroll receives a modern 3D interpretation in Urbana’s Tuscany sofa. Hank Vu, the designer of the piece and chief of design for the Santa Clara, CA, company, likes to take classical elements and give them an unexpected twist.
“The swirl that’s used at the end of the armrest is usually a flat, one-dimensional element,” Vu says. “I wanted to bring that shape to life so you can see it from every angle.”
The sofa’s back is one piece of bent plywood, shaped to provide three distinct concave backrests that cradle three occupants in ergonomic comfort. The back frame forms integral back legs, lifting the thick seat platform slightly off the floor to make it seem less heavy, Vu explains. Modern cast aluminum front legs also add lightness. The curved, tufted seat uses sinuous wire support, covered with high density foam and three layers of fiber.
A separate piece of bent plywood is padded with foam to create a rigid internal framework for the swirled arm. As you could probably guess, it’s not easy to upholster such a shape. Vu’s assistant, Hue Dong, helps figure out how to get the cover on this piece, and other unusual shapes Vu devises.
